Diem proclaims the Republic of Vietnam, with himself as the President, Prime Minister, Defense Minister, and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The new state is immediately recognized by the United States, France, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Thailand, South Korea and Japan.
